Building Like the Saints

At a recent Napa Institute gathering, YCP Executive Director Peter Blute participated in a panel discussion with leaders from SENT Ventures and the Leonine Forum to discuss the challenges and potentials of developing future Catholic leaders.

Emma Boyle, Director of Operations at the Leonine Forum, highlighted the importance of capturing people’s attention amidst their diverse commitments. She shared, "There are so many competing circumstances... people are drawn to their careers, their families, their friends, or their hobbies." Emma encouraged everyone to strive for excellence in all these areas, emphasizing, "We have to be excellent, and we have to do that in community." Her message was a reminder that success can be a collective journey!

Next up, John Cannon, founder of SENT Ventures, addressed the prevalent question among young people, "how do you know if you're successful or not?"  He invited the audience to reconsider the cultural emphasis on material success and introduced the concept of "spiritual entrepreneurship." By sharing the inspiring lives of entrepreneurial saints like Mother Teresa and Don Bosco, he illustrated how business can be a spiritual endeavor. John encouraged the audience to immerse themselves in prayer, suggesting that it will provide greater clarity to both personal and professional aspirations.

Peter Blute highlighted another critical area of focus: the need for positive role models for young people. He pointed out that "the hand that's extended to young people from many companies is really not seeking their best interest." To help bridge this gap, Peter called on the audience to connect young people with mentors who truly champion their growth and well-being in various aspects of life.

The panelists concluded by encouraging further collaboration within the Church.  They acknowledged the challenges but celebrated the incredible opportunities for growth that collaboration can bring. Organizations like the Young Catholic Professionals, Leonine Forum, and SENT Ventures are already reaping the fruits of collaboration, nurturing emerging Catholic leaders through joint efforts, mentorship, and shared resources.

We are grateful to the Napa Institute for inviting Peter Blute to take part in this important discussion.  Together we are paving the way for a vibrant community of mission-driven leaders.
